Motifs are decorative patterns woven or designed on the saree body, border, or pallu. In Paithani sarees, motifs are often inspired by nature, birds, flowers, and traditional art.

Butta, Butti and Pallu: Where the Motifs Sit

Three words come up again and again when you shop for a Paithani, and knowing them makes choosing much easier.

Butti are the small motifs scattered across the body of the saree. Butta is the larger version of the same motif, usually placed on the pallu or along the border. Pallu is the decorated end of the saree that falls over the shoulder, and it is where a Paithani shows off its heaviest zari work.

So a saree described as “big peacock butta” has large peacocks on the pallu, while “muniya butti” means small parrots repeated across the body.

1. Peacock Butta (Mor)

The peacock is the most recognised Paithani motif and the most festive. Woven in copper zari and filled with meena colours, a peacock butta pallu is the classic choice for weddings and for the first day of a festival.

Peacock motifs come in two scales. Big peacock butta gives a grand, bridal look. Small peacock meena butti scattered across the body gives a lighter finish that still reads as traditional Paithani.

2. Muniya Butta (Parrot)

The muniya is a small parrot, and it is the signature motif of Maharashtra. A muniya butta is woven in bright meena shades against the zari, which is why Muniya Paithani sarees look colourful even from a distance.

Muniya butti sarees are light on the eye and easy to wear, which makes them popular for daily festive occasions, haldi kumkum and family functions rather than only for weddings.

3. Floral Meena Butta

Floral motifs are woven in meena work, where coloured silk threads fill the outline created by the zari. A floral meena butta gives a softer, more delicate look than a bird motif and suits women who prefer something less heavy.

Floral designs pair especially well with pastel and pink shades, and they photograph well because the meena colours stand out against the zari.

4. Chakra Phool Butta

Chakra phool means “wheel flower” — a circular floral motif with petals radiating from the centre. The chakra phool butta is a geometric, symmetrical design, which gives the saree a structured and premium finish.

5. Star Motif Butta (Zari Star)

The star motif butta is a small zari star repeated across the body. It is one of the simplest Paithani motifs and the most versatile — it works for office wear, pooja, and family functions equally well.

6. Polka Butta

The polka butta is a round zari dot repeated at even spacing. It is the most modern-looking of the traditional motifs and a good starting point if this is your first Paithani saree.

Motifs on the Pallu, and What Double Pallu Means

The pallu is where a Paithani carries its heaviest weaving. Most sarees have one decorated pallu. A Double Pallu Paithani saree is different: double pallu is a pallu design that Paithani buyers know well, and its length is longer than a normal pallu — which is exactly why it carries that name.

Because the pallu is longer, the motifs on it are shown at full scale, and the saree drapes with more of the design visible over the shoulder.

How to Care for a Woven Paithani Motif

Zari and meena work need a little care. Dry clean the saree rather than washing it, fold it along a different line each time so the zari does not crease in the same place, and store it wrapped in a cotton cloth away from direct sunlight. Kept this way, a Paithani stays bright for many years.
